Secondhand Depression
Ontario-based duo fusing the atmospheric guitar melodies of Katatonia with the visceral lyricism of Chelsea Wolfe.
Secondhand Depression started off as recording project during the COVID-19 pandemic between multi- instrumentalist Lucas Di Mascio and percussionist Michael Farina. Inspired by a DIY approach to exploring technology and creativity, the duo is continuing this exploration with an upcoming EP to be released in 2027. Everything from the music, videos to artwork is handcrafted by the duo; a refreshing approach in an age mired by AI driven shortcuts and stagnation.
Secondhand Depression is gearing up to release a second EP after an extended gap from their debut EP in 2020. The Limbo Tapes will be released in early 2027 and will feature four more songs from the Ontario based-duo.
“The music on The Limbo Tapes was initially written during the height of the pandemic, and we spent a lot of time refining how we wanted the music to progress.” Lucas Di Mascio explains. “We didn’t want to retread ground from the first release, but wanted to really push the boundaries of what we could do as a DIY focused band. I’ve alwayed beleived limitation breeds creativity – The Limbo Tapes puts that idea to the test.” The band is remaining tight lipped about what the songs on the EP are about, but themes of health, illness and what we allow to define ourselves are prevalent throughout the four songs.
“While there are no plans for live performances right now, we have a lot of cool things that we’ve never done before as artists in any project we’ve ever been associated with that we are getting ready to release during this EP cycle. We’re really excited and want to show other independent artists what they can do with some determination, imagination and some sweat.”
Ever the champions for the creative spirit, Secondhand Depression is sure to inspire other creatives with their hands-on approach to every element of their production. “We always saw other creatives as our main audience.” Lucas says. “We like the idea of being a ‘band’s band’, we don’t make music for well-adjusted normal people (laughs).”
The band’s previous four song EP (self-titled) included the release of four videos and a small press campaign preceded a limited edition physical copy of the release which included a download code for a drum sample library ripped right from the EP’s recording sessions. There will surely be some interesting production or DIY-focused additional materials included when the full EP is released.
