Subway Roy
Born and raised in Toronto, Roy Morency — better known to some as “Subway Roy” — has spent over 40 years playing, creating, and living music.
Roy first made his mark as a drummer, providing the heartbeat for bands across the city for decades. About 13 lucky years ago, he picked up the guitar and discovered a whole new creative path through songwriting, recording, and solo performance.
His music blends rhythm, soul, storytelling, and lived experience — shaped by years of performing everywhere from local venues to TTC subway platforms. Between 2015 and 2018, Roy became a familiar face in Toronto’s subway musician scene, where his performances regularly stopped busy commuters in their tracks and turned ordinary rides into memorable moments.
Roy also shared his love of music through teaching, helping implement a drum program for youth at Regent Park Focus. Whether mentoring kids, busking underground, or performing live on stage, music has always been about connection.
He recently completed his 5-song EP, Story Teller, available on YouTube, featuring original songs inspired by life, resilience, love, and the characters you meet along the way.
Alongside his originals, Roy brings a unique energy to the stage with creative cover mashups and unexpected twists — including combinations like Elvis and Michael Jackson that somehow work perfectly. His 45-minute live set is heartfelt, high-energy, and guaranteed to get your feet tapping and your hands clapping.
