Mager BooBoo
Mager BooBoo is a Canadian expat artist currently living in Thailand and a singer/songwriter who began playing guitar and writing songs at 14 years old but, over the last 20-25 years, had hung up the guitar and his musical aspirations to pursue teaching English. In his early career, he wrote songs, produced, directed, wrote scripts and performed in musical theatre productions for the Salt ‘n’ Pepper Theater Company (and for a brief time directed and acted with Samantha Bee), the Salt ‘n’ Pepper Radio Show (CHEZ 106-produced by Jeff Green), and Cowboy Who? (CHRO TV-late 1990s), an award-winning children’s television show for a CBC satellite station in Pembroke, Ontario, Canada. An earlier incarnation of Mager Booboo (Major Bubu) first appeared in 2 Kinds of Green, a music video written and performed by Robert for Cowboy Who? He also wrote and performed in the band 101 with his brother Tom Eastland. 101 released two albums, Thanksgiving Day, a live-off-the-floor recording of alternative folk songs, and Fully Bugged, an album delving into a more “rock” sound. Robert has 51 songs registered with SOCAN as either main writer or co-writer, many of which have had airplay on Canadian and other radio stations in the past.
Mager BooBoo’s songs are indie/alternative rock although if he were to make up a new name for the category of his music, he would call it “Heavy Irony”: “Heavy” because the music features multiple compressed harmonic vocals, electric guitars, electric bass and drum kit and “Irony” due to the slightly biting, humorous lyrics. His songs feature multiple vocal and guitar tracks, hopping, thudding, phat bass lines, and self-programmed Drum Machine Designer tracks. With a voice that might best be described as similar to Steven Tyler reincarnated as a Siberian husky, Mager Booboo does not try to serenade, but instead speaks truth to power. His lyrics are deep and ironic dives into what it means to be human in the modern world. Robert often uses animal metaphors and analogies in his songs to remind us that even though we don’t always remember it, we are basically animals, biological life forms intrinsically linked to the well-being of our planet and biosphere. He is working on his debut solo album Oops!, a collection of recent works embodying the kind of creativity and humor that can only come from human organic intelligence.
Nowadays, he teaches English full-time at a university in Thailand, has created an English-learning YouTube channel with his wife, a Thai English teacher, and spends his free time as a studio musician, creating songs to inspire others. Although a semi-professional musician in his early life, he had only ever used 4 track cassette recording to do at-home song production. He has recently learned the modern technology from scratch and has learned to produce his own music using Logic Pro on a Mac Studio computer.
